Rome Jewelry Week 2023, the “I Daverio” Award for jewel-sculpture goes to Angela Gentile
It took place from 6 to 15 October Rome Jewelry Week 2023, the third edition of the a manifestation has been conducted dedicated to contemporary jewellery. Numerous jewelery designers, goldsmith ateliers, students and teachers from design academies and schools participated. For the first time, the “I Daverio” award, created by the Daverio1933 brand, the sponsors of the event, and dedicated to jewel-sculpture.
The “I Daverio” Award goes to the goldsmith artist Angela Gentile
The recognition awarded by Luca Daverio was created to enhance the jewelry-sculpture, a true tradition of the Daverio family, started by father Franco in 1933 and continued since the 80s by his son Luca. The “I Daverio” award, which debuted this year at the Rome Jewelry Week 2023, aims to promote the excellence of designers who choose jewel-sculpture to express their artistic creativity.
The award went to the designer Angela Gentile and to her brooch-necklace with the evocative name: “BOOM! Explosion of light”. The jewel was made of raw silver, with black diamond and synthetic diamonds, semi-rough quartz, silver filings, epoxy resin and fragments of recovered lava rock. These fragments, the artist wrote in the synopsis presenting his work, represent «traces of the primordial past, memories of cosmic explosions and terrible beauty. “We are made of the same matter that the stars are made of”, we carry within us the imprints of Creation and we continually disintegrate, shatter and rebuild in a perpetual motion and new life».
Angela Gentile is a goldsmith artist who began creating jewelry in 1987, using precious metals and classic techniques such as fretwork and embossing. In her artistic career she then began to use natural elements and different and "poor" materials in her creations.
The art of the Daverios is the protagonist of the Rome Jewelry Week 2023
Among the most followed and appreciated events of the Rome Jewelry Week 2023, the conference held by Luke Daverio at Palazzo Valentini, entitled “The art of the Daverios, from Franco Daverio to today”.
The designer spoke first of all about the creative process: «Perfect things are cold: the ocean without waves is cold, it is the waves that move it. Human imperfections characterize us and I hope that algorithms will never overwhelm our soul. I like to chisel my signs, sometimes I move just a little, but I continue to move until I feel that there is a harmony that satisfies me and only then do we move on to 3D drawing. It's not the hand connected to what you do, but it's the soul."
Luca Daverio then recalled the family tradition, which was born from sculpture: «We didn't start out as goldsmiths: my father was a sculptor, painter and graphic designer. The starting point matters a lot, because it is a different way of operating. For us the union between art and jewelery is always present and we materialize it in a plastic way: before being goldsmiths we are visionaries, we like manual skills, experimenting with materials, understanding how to make an object".
«For me, jewelery is not a container of preciousness, but of emotions – continued Daverio. – It is a sculpture, a miniature work of art, but it has something that sculpture does not have: it is art that you wear. Creating a personalized jewel is like creating a tailor-made dress, you have to think about who will wear it: the person must feel in harmony with this object which has a soul and which is aimed at another soul. We don't create jewels for marketing, but out of passion."
